Characters for active/receptive use
The characters are linked to the syllabus topics and have been listed in categories. All characters have been listed once but some are appropriate to a number of topics.
Through the use of kanji, hiragana and katakana students will develop their skills in understanding and producing texts and be able to demonstrate their ability to apply the conventions of the writing system.

Characters for receptive use
The following characters are set for receptive use only. These characters and those
listed for active/receptive use may be assessed in Sections I and II of the Written
Examination. In addition, students may be required to determine the meaning of a
small number of other kanji appropriate to the topic areas.
